The Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission maintains a register of Australian charities.

ACNC makes the registered charity details available via the government data portal. This data includes the registered name, address, and the nominal categories of people they support (such as ‘adults’, ‘youth’, ‘homeless people’).

I refined list of 50595 registered charities and to produce a list of 26 confirmed LGBTIQ+ charities that promote the TQ+. These are unlikely to be the only LGBTIQ+ charities registered in Australia.

For each of the 26, I manually collected additional data from the ACNC website about the

  • Last year they filed their accounts
  • Total revenue
  • Percentage of revenue from government sources

Two new charities have not yet filed their accounts. One charity had never filed their account and was marked ‘late’.

This leaves 23 charities, their total revenue and the revenue they receive from various government sources.

TOTAL AND GOVERNMENT REVENUE

STATE

For interest, I amalgamated the total government contributions by state. Then compared the spend to the latest population figures published by the ABS to get a spend per capita:

WHO’S BEING HELPED?

In case you’re interested, these are the canned categories of people helped by these 23 charities. Note all 23 are helping “adults” and “youth”, and the numbers dwindle from there. I think there must be a sense of wanting to cover a large number of categories to justify funding bids.
